Born in Texas, Melissa attended Columbia University before embarking upon a professional acting career that paved the way towards one in filmmaking. She pursued her master’s degree at the American Film Institute and while there, was awarded the Daniel Petrie scholarship, the Women In Film scholarship, and the Richard P. Rogers Spirit of Excellence for achievements in directing. Melissa was most recently recognized by Director's Guild with a Jury Award for her thesis film Ni-Ni.
