MVFF’s ¡Viva el Cine! initiative continues its annual celebration of Spanish-language and Latin American films and stories with this festive collection of shorts for families and younger viewers. With animated silhouettes against colorful backgrounds, the mythical story of Carandaí, the first sunflower in the world, is vibrantly brought to life.

Additional Information

María Victoria Sánchez was born and raised in Maracaibo, Venezuela, she had the opportunity to live and study in Europe, obtaining the title of Master in Animation at Pompeu Fabra University, in Barcelona, Spain. After eight years in Europe, she returns to Venezuela to teach animation. Her love for traditional stories, indigenous art and animation led her to adapt a Mapuche myth with the esthetic of the Wayuú culture. Girasol is her first professional narrative work as a director.
