MVFF’s ¡Viva el Cine! initiative continues its annual celebration of Spanish-language and Latin American films and stories with this festive collection of shorts for families and younger viewers. These kid-centric animated, narrative, and documentary films are a visual feast for both Spanish and English speakers alike. Spelliasmous (Ben Garfield, Cuba/UK 2018, 3 min) takes to the streets of Cuba, where the magic of Harry Potter is alive and well for three wand-wielding friends. In the animated Ailín on the Moon (Claudia Ruiz, Argentina 2018, 5 min), a mother’s patience is tested by her young daughter. For two brothers, a birthday gift of a new watch leads to an anxious countdown to a special moment in time in 11:40 (Claudia Ruiz, Argentina 2018, 12 min). In the mountains of Colombia, an aspiring young bike racer goes to great lengths to cheer on his cycling idol in Champiñon (Luber Yesid Zuñiga Ordoñez, Colombia 2017, 8 min). With animated silhouettes against vibrant backgrounds, Girasol (Maria Victoria Sánchez Lara, Venezuela 2019, 9 min) recounts the mythical story of Carandaí, the first sunflower in the world. From an international documentary series following children around the world on their way from home to school, 199 Little Heroes: Jesus from Mexico (Lina Luzyte, Germany/Mexico 2018, 10 min) introduces 11-year-old Jesus and his little sister as they make the journey by boat through the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco in Mexico City. Based on Guaraní mythology, Land Without Evil (Katalin Egely, Argentina/Hungary 2017, 4 min) offers a musically-driven, animated vision of a paradise on earth where all creatures live in harmony. In hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, a young boy’s heroic efforts to help his grandfather may not be enough to save the day in The Blue Cape (Alejandra López, Puerto Rico 2019, 5 min). In The Cubicbird (Jorge Alberto Vega, Colombia 2019, 9 min), a baby bird raised in a small cage dreams of freedom and finds an unexpected way to fly the coop—and inspire his friends to follow his lead. Ramón (Natalia Bernal, Colombia/Mexico 2020, 8 min) follows an 8-year-old Mexican kickboxer-in-training as he learns the true meaning of winning and losing in his first major competition. And one girl’s obsession with a particular condiment forces her to overcome her shyness and make her needs known in Shy & Ketchup (Teresa Romo, Chile 2019, 4 min). Age 9+
