Renesha (Brittany S. Hall, Ballers) and Evan (Will Brill, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) are a young interracial couple settled in their life. On a night out with a friend, Renesha is sexually assaulted. The next day, the couple struggles with the aftermath, leaving Renesha unsure how to proceed as Evan urges her to seek medical attention. But getting a rape kit is not a simple process, pushing the boundaries of their relationship and leaving audiences wondering what the “right” thing to do really is. Writer-director Shatara Michelle Ford brings a stunning visual authority to their debut feature, exploring not only how this relationship functions in crisis but also flashing back to the initial optimism of their budding relationship (as well as racial and class complications). By taking on important conversations—the failures of the system to serve survivors of rape, the silencing of Black women—Test Pattern wisely explores the unexamined and interpersonal human nuances in the fallout of abuse.
