Description

TRIBUTE TO GEOFFREY RUSH

At this Tribute program, Geoffrey Rush will be presented with the MVFF Award, designed by acclaimed Mill Valley artist Alice Corning.

Mill Valley and the Bay Area first took a shine to Geoffrey Rush back in 1996. That was the year he came to the Festival accompanying Scott Hicks’ Shine, in which Rush’s brilliant portrayal of pianist David Helfgott proved the consummate breakthrough role, earning the Australian actor an Academy Award (the first of his countrymen to be so honored) and setting him squarely along the path of an internationally renowned calling as one of cinema’s finest character actors. Since then he has excelled in a career whose sheer variety of roles is surely the envy of any aspiring screen artist: Javert (Les Misérables), the Marquis De Sade (Quills), Peter Sellers (The Life and Death of Peter Sellers), Captain Hector Barbossa (Pirates of the Caribbean), Leon Trotsky (Frida), Nigel the pelican (Finding Nemo), Lady Bracknell (The Importance of Being Ernest)—to name only a bare few! Along the way, Rush has justly accrued both plaudits (including Emmy and Tony Awards to go with the Oscar) and staunch admirers the world over. Starring this year in both Giuseppe Tornatore’s The Best Offer and Brian Percival’s The Book Thief, Rush returns to the Festival as an honored guest and a familiar, highly versatile face.
