Winner of top festival awards including the Amnesty International Film Prize and best debut at the Berlin Film Festival, Kim Mordaunt’s first feature brings to light one of the darkest chapters in 20th-century history—the aftermath of the Vietnam War in Laos—and treats it with surprising delicacy, grace and gentle humor. The story centers on Ahlo, a boy believed to bring ill luck wherever he goes, and his undaunted efforts to compete in the annual rocket-launch competition in a village ironically nicknamed Paradise, site of innumerable bombings during the war. Ahlo’s two companions, also outcasts, are a former Laotian soldier under American employ, living in disgrace, called James Brown (and bearing an uncanny likeness to the soul star) and his free-spirited little niece Kia, Ahlo’s first love interest. With gripping performances and unpredictable twists, The Rocket is a magical and deep experience that reaches for the skies.
