In a dazzling homage to his mentors and artistic inspirations, multimedia maestro and visual mix-master extraordinaire John Sanborn (The Planets, MVFF 2011; A Sweeter Music, MVFF 2009) pays tribute to an illustrious trio of 20th-century innovators: Nam Jun Paik, Marcel Duchamp and John Cage. Sanborn’s Performance Indeterminate Cage Opera (PICO) deftly interweaves aspects of live performance and dance with outstanding soundtrack contributions from pianist Sarah Cahill, cellist-composer Theresa Wong, electronics wizard Wobbly and infamous culture-jammers Negativland. Layered with a series of touching personal reminiscences, Sanborn’s PICO urges a literal and figurative shift in our frames of reference. Hypnotic and meditative, and pulsing with life, color and sensuality, PICO is a wondrous and exhilarating reflection on the cultural shift brought about by its iconic trio of innovators—while adding a fourth master (Sanborn himself) to the mix.
