Wild women don’t get the blues, or at least so goes a line from the seminal all-women’s jazz group Alive! (1977–1987). Its drummer, the compelling Barbara Borden, is a virtuoso musician whose career has taken many surprising twists and turns. From the time she banged on her first toy drum at age five, Borden has charted a singular course through a male-dominated world, becoming, in her words, “the drum’s lover instead of its master.” A lively local presence who until recently taught drumming at Mill Valley’s senior community, The Redwoods, Borden has taken her joyful art around the world in acts of drumbeat diplomacy, connecting with people and communities as far afield as Croatia, Tanzania and Siberia. In ancient cultures, women were the guardians of the drums—the keepers of the beat. This in-depth survey of Borden’s career and influence illustrates why this wild woman will never get the blues.
