In Spanish with English subtitles. “We all face crossroads in our lives where we can retreat into ourselves or we can hit the dance floor.” Acclaimed actress Paulina Garcia danced off with the Silver Bear at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival for her delightfully astute and compassionate portrait of the titular 58-year-old divorcée and mom who, facing an imminent empty nest, has no intention of spending her days and nights alone. Determined to defy old age and loneliness, Gloria rushes headlong into a whirl of singles’ parties on the hunt for instant gratification—with, understandably, disappointing results. Then along comes the dashing Rodolfo. But as the new couple try to forge a lasting bond, their pasts constantly intrude in this engaging, amusing and uplifting film inspired by the life of director Sebastián Lelio’s own mother and her generation in Chile.
