Director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) and actor Joel Edgerton (Boy Erased, MVFF Award 2018) ambitiously adapt Shakespeare’s texts to recount rebellious Prince Hal’s reluctant transition into the crowned King of England, Henry V. Despite numerous objections to his father’s ruling principles and no desire to follow in his footsteps, wayward Prince Hal (a dynamite Timothée Chalamet) becomes Henry V after his father dies and inherits a war with France that once served as the biggest wedge between the two men and their beliefs. Michôd conducts several epic battles with an intriguing sense of realism that keeps The King away from the familiar ranks of blind heroism that so often plagues historical war films. With Edgerton as the king’s trusted confidant, Chalamet is joined by the exceptional supporting cast of Sean Harris, Ben Mendelsohn, Lily Rose-Depp, and a delightfully deranged Robert Pattinson as the Dauphin of France.
