We are proud to present a selection of films from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, widely regarded as one of the country’s best journalism programs, which routinely produces groundbreaking stories for broadcast, print, and online outlets. Emma Schwartz’s Brewed in Palestine (US 2019, 17 min) presents an intimate portrait of the Taybeh Brewery created by a resourceful Palestinian family living and working under Israeli occupation in the West Bank. Eva Rendle’s touching All That Remains (US 2019, 20 min) revisits Northern California’s wine country a year after deadly wildfires ravaged the landscape and the lives of its vulnerable population of farmworkers, many of them undocumented, who find themselves in a heightened state of insecurity and inequality. Years after the closure of a major public hospital in the Bay Area, patients, first responders, and care providers must adapt to the long distances and limited options in Bo Kovitz’s powerful The Desert (US 2019, 28 min). And Sarah Cahlan uses a dizzying array of archival footage, location shooting, incisive interviews, and wry wit in Theirstory (US 2019, 22 min) to explore assumptions about gender roles in prehistory anthropology scholarship. Don’t miss this terrific collection of stories from filmmakers in our own backyard.
