Filmmakers Lisa Cortés and Farah X remix the history of hip-hop fashion by shining a spotlight on the pioneering stylists and designers whose brilliant vision brought the indelible style, swagger, and savvy of African American culture and creativity to the music industry, the runway, and the masses. Meet Misa Hylton, the image architect and driving force behind iconic looks worn by Mary J. Blige, Lil’ Kim, and Missy Elliott; Dapper Dan, the designer whose legendary Harlem boutique outfitted musicians, moguls, and aspiring tastemakers in head-to-toe designer logos around the clock; April Walker, the game-changing proprietress of Brooklyn’s Fashion in Effect; Kerby Jean-Raymond, artist and founder of unabashedly political high-fashion design house Pyer Moss; and more. Their powerful global impact is fully explored in this electric, beat-heavy homage to the stars behind the scenes, whose artistic excellence continues to fuel a new Black Renaissance and influence the dreams, rhymes, and life of contemporary fashion and culture.
