CLOSING NIGHT: Edward Norton makes a glorious, confident transition into the director’s chair with a stylish, engrossing adaptation of Jonathan Lethem’s acclaimed 1999 novel of the same name, an intricate, noir-ish story set in 1950s Brooklyn. When a deceptively routine case for a detective agency proves deadly, the team of gumshoes—led by Lionel Essrog (Norton), a man with Tourette’s syndrome and an uncanny photographic memory—dive head-first into their investigation, uncovering a dangerous coverup and high-ranking corruption within the elected city planning committee of Brooklyn. With quick dialogue, elaborate twists, a keen sense of humor, and an evocative film noir score by Daniel Pemberton (and songs by Thom Yorke), Motherless Brooklyn showcases Norton at his best as a triple threat (writer-director-actor). Certainly one of the most gifted actors of his generation, the three time Oscar® nominee effectively elicits memorable turns from his prodigious A-list cast, which includes Bruce Willis, Alec Baldwin, Gugu Mbathaw-Raw, Cherry Jones, and Willem Dafoe.
