The reception is as icy as the winter temperature for Erick, a novice priest in a small Maine town haunted by both the dubious legacy of his religious predecessor and the memory of Josh, a local boy missing for five years. Hoping to be an agent of healing for the community, Erick soon becomes embroiled in a mystery when the boy, presumed dead, reappears. Where had Josh gone, and why? There are many questions but few answers, and in the ensuing drama, clerical vows are strained, family ties challenged and startling secrets revealed. Writer-director Andrew Brotzman presents his story in a style as austere as it is visually striking, capturing the bleakness of the emotional and physical landscape in short, delicate brushstrokes in this exquisitely cinematic and masterfully directed debut feature.
