Directed by Cate Shortland

Australian director Cate Shortland’s long-awaited follow-up to her acclaimed debut, Somersault (2004), is the story of the eponymous German teenager who, immediately following the fall of the Third Reich and the arrest of her Nazi-loyalist parents, must lead her four younger siblings to safety over hundreds of miles of war-ravaged countryside. In the title role, newcomer Saskia Rosendahl carries the film with remarkable range and depth. When a Jewish refugee (Kai Malina) joins the family of war refugees, intent on guiding them all to safety, Rosendahl achingly manifests Lore’s internal struggle between deeply ingrained prejudice and a burgeoning love. The result is a lushly filmed, poignantly dramatized exploration of the emotional and physical fallout experienced by children caught in the crossfire of war and history.
