SPOTLIGHT: DAKOTA FANNING
Join us for a Spotlight program featuring a conversation with Dakota Fanning and a screening of Effie Gray.
Dakota Fanning will be presented with the MVFF Award, designed by acclaimed Mill Valley artist Alice Corning. After the program, join us at Frantoio Ristorante and Olive Oil Co., one of Marin County's premier dining destinations.
Penned by Academy Award–winning screenwriter Emma
Thompson and based on the true events that scandalized aristocratic circles of
the Victorian era, this sumptuous cinematic portrait explores the curiously
brief marriage and abrupt annulment of famed art critic John Ruskin (Greg Wise)
and his ethereal childbride, Euphemia “Effie” Gray (a mesmerizing Dakota
Fanning). Repressed sensuality, religious and political strife and the role of
art at a crucial point of cultural transition all inform the social contest
underway as well as the storm raging within the outwardly restrained Ruskin.
Shot amid the gorgeous landscapes of the British Isles, with superior art
direction throughout, the film features outstanding performances from Fanning
as well as a veritable who’s who of British acting—including an incandescent
Thompson as a pragmatic benefactress. Effie Gray offers an exquisite and
tantalizing peek into the celebrated compositions and secreted boudoirs of the
famously fastidious Victorian Age.
