Tony Bennett became the oldest artist to crack the US pop charts with last year’s Duets II album, which debuted at number one (his first) on the singer’s 85th birthday. Some of the secrets to his decades-long career and recent mainstream success are shared in The Zen of Bennett, Unjoo Moon’s behind-the-scenes look at the making of the milestone album. Sessions with Andrea Bocelli, Lady Gaga, John Mayer, Aretha Franklin and the late Amy Winehouse, as well as cameos by the likes of Gay Talese, are interspersed with Bennett’s musings on art, music and the importance of family. Bennett is a fount of firsthand stories concerning the likes of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne, and he shares anecdotes to pass on the wisdom of his elders. But the real gems in the film are moments in the studio with his recording partners, offering a rare, intimate glimpse of how the music is made and friendships are forged.
