The twilight of one genius and the dawn of another are honored in this rich and sensual drama set on the French Riviera in the summer of 1915. Despite declining health, celebrated painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir finds fresh inspiration in Andre´e, his fiery-haired new model. His son Jean, wounded in World War I, returns home to convalesce and becomes similarly fascinated with this free-spirited young woman. Veteran actor Michel Bouquet delivers an immensely moving performance as Renoir pe`re, whose frailty and arthritic hands belie his undiminished talents. Vincent Rottiers ably embodies Jean Renoir as an unformed young man with little inkling of his destiny as one of the icons of the 20th century’s own art, the cinema. Christa Theret, caressed by the Mediterranean light in sun-drenched images that recall Impressionist paintings, is luminous as the self- possessed teenager who becomes the older artist’s final muse and the nascent filmmaker’s first.
