It’s hard to believe it took 55 years to bring Jack Kerouac’s generation-defining, quintessentially American novel, On the Road, to the big screen—with a Brazilian director (Walter Salles) at the helm, no less. Kerouac alter ego Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) shambles after the manic, ecstatic Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) as they crisscross the country from New York to Denver to San Francisco and back again, fueled by Benzedrine-laced tea, hot barroom jazz and a desire for sensory kicks. In a breakout role, Hedlund blazes onscreen as Moriarty, the “holy con-man with the shining mind” who seduces women (Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart) and men alike with his mad, bad need to burn like Kerouac’s proverbial roman candle. Rather than romanticizing the iconic Beat Generation, Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) masterfully captures both its restless dissatisfaction and underlying selfish futility; Dean may burn brightly, but his fiery unpredictability ends up consuming even himself. Featuring excellent supporting performances from Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge and Viggo Mortensen, On the Road is a cinematic road trip well worth taking, however long it took to hitch here.
