FOCUS: LATIN AMERICA • In his feature film debut, writer-director Antonio Méndez Esparza creates a world that pulls us in and never lets go. When Pedro returns to his small Mexican village of Copa, he’s not sure what to expect. He’s been away from his family for years, working multiple jobs in New York to send money to his wife and daughters back home. His wife greets him with quiet yet unequivocal affection. Young daughter Heidi is curious and open, while his eldest, Lorena, is hesitant, remembering the father she knew as a little girl through the guarded eyes of a teenager. As the family begins to rediscover one another, Pedro struggles to support them while keeping his dream alive of playing music with his band, The Copa Kings. With a natural style that is as lyrical as it is devastating, moments large and small are deftly, gracefully explored in this profoundly affecting drama.
