The Empire Strikes Back
director Irvin Kershner was hand-picked by George Lucas to direct the first Star Wars
sequel based on his ability to deliver revealing insights into human relationships. Having directed films such as Eyes of Laura Mars
, The Flim-Flam Man
, and The Return of a Man Called Horse
, among others, Kershner was considered an unconventional choice at the time to helm a space fantasy, but Lucas wanted a director who could further develop the emotional aspects of the main characters and their relationships with one another.
